The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announce that 2004 will be the last year for the church pageant. Elder Donald L. Staheli, General Authority of the Church, advised local and area church leaders that the pageant will "retire" at the conclusion of the 2004 performances, scheduled for July 30-31, and August 3-7. The "CITY OF JOSEPH" pageant has been performed each year in Nauvoo since 1976 (except for 1993 during the flood) and has provided wonderful summer entertainment for over a half million viewers. Elder Staheli stated that "with the creation of the Illinois Nauvoo Mission, the reconstruction of the Nauvoo Temple, and the establishment of the BYU-Semester in Nauvoo program, it is obvious the city no longer sleeps, as the line in the pageant describes". He further announced that "Various performing groups from BYU Provo will perform throughout the summer" and that details will be announced in the near future. He has encouraged all involved with the pageant to make this "The Best Year Ever". Local businessmen are very saddened with this news. The pageant brings much tourism revenue to the community of 1200 each year. The pageant cast and crew (about 600) will present their last show on Saturday night August 7th to what is expected to be a record crowd.
